I pregi notevoli, e qualche riserva, del film che a Cannes ha risollevato, assieme a GOMORRA, le sorti da anni traballanti del cinema italiano nascono dalle due potenti, anche se ovviamente dissimili personalità sulle quali si costruisce. La prima è quella di Giulio Andreotti, specchio assoluto nel bene e nel male della politica italiana del dopoguerra, che Sorrentino fa trascrivere dal solito grande Toni Servillo con una trasparenza che gioca ai confini della caricatura. La seconda è di uno degli autori più personali dell'ultimo cinema italiano, regista di opere forse non ancora metabolizzate a fondo come UN UOMO IN PIÙ o LE CONSEGUENZE DELL'AMORE.

Non è sempre evidente parlare di chi è ancora ai vertici dell'attualità (la riprova, W, l'ultimo film di Oliver Stone su Bush), senza il distacco del tempo che permette all'artista di riscrivere nella memoria con l'energia straniante del proprio sguardo. Sorrentino sfida temerariamente questa legge, cita nomi e cognomi, ricalca profili e accenti assolutamente identificabili, episodi documentabili. Senza rinunciare per questo a spedire tutto quel malloppo di realtà, d'intromissioni pubbliche come intime nel proprio universo poetico d'ingrandimenti espressionistici, barocchi e grotteschi, magari felliniani.

Navigando mirabilmente fra questi scogli non solo IL DIVO riesuma così il cinema di denuncia politica piuttosto dimenticato che nasceva dall'incontro fra Elio Petri e Gian Maria Volonté; ma la miscela fra l'invenzione fantastica e la volontà polemica di Sorrentino finisce per rispecchiare tutta l'ambigua complessità di un personaggio e la fatica del cammino democratico di una società.

The notable merits, and a few reservations, of the film that at Cannes, together with GOMORRA, lifted the shaky fortunes of Italian cinema for years, stem from the two powerful, though obviously dissimilar personalities on which it is based. The first is that of Giulio Andreotti, the absolute mirror for better or worse of post-war Italian politics, which Sorrentino has transcribed by the usually great Toni Servillo with a transparency that plays on the borders of caricature. The second is by one of the most personal auteurs of recent Italian cinema, director of works that have perhaps not yet been fully metabolised, such as UN UOMO IN PIÙ or LE CONSEGUENZE DELL'AMORE.

It is not always obvious to talk about someone who is still at the top of current affairs (the proof, W, Oliver Stone's latest film on Bush), without the detachment of time that allows the artist to rewrite in memory with the alienating energy of his own gaze. Sorrentino recklessly defies this law, citing names and surnames, tracing profiles and accents that are absolutely identifiable, documentable episodes. Without for this reason renouncing to send all that mess of reality, of public and intimate intrusions in his own poetic universe of expressionistic, baroque and grotesque, even Fellini-like enlargements.

Navigating admirably between these rocks, not only does IL DIVO revive the rather forgotten cinema of political denunciation that was born from the encounter between Elio Petri and Gian Maria Volonté; but the mixture of fantastic invention and Sorrentino's polemical will ends up reflecting all the ambiguous complexity of a character and the fatigue of the democratic path of a society.
